China’s government plays an outsized role in the economy. Whether local, provincial or central, the government is not only a supervisory organ but often an actual partner in business. Excellent relations with all relevant levels of government are therefore generally a must for business success in China.
Another important aspect of government relations is industrial standards development. Sometimes business battles are won or lost very early based on the details of the standards that the government has chosen for a particular industry. Engagement with the government and with industry associations to influence standards is strategically important.
We have vast experience of engaging with the Chinese government at all levels. Our managing director has served as head of the Investment Working Group of the EU Chamber of Commerce in China three times, and is constantly engaged in contacts with the Chinese government on behalf of European business interests.
